If you believe in the #Fediverse :

- post here
- bring your friends and family here
- tell companies, governments and creators to be here
- pay for your instance
- pay for your software

Do one thing every day. The Fediverse is worth fighting for.

Like the previous article on Grassroots fediverse evolution, this is a long blog post, so I provided an article summary to be TL;DR'ed 😊

#SX #SocialCoding #SocialWeb #ActivityPub #fediverse

This year, Sunday will be dedicated entirely to the developer community – with sessions on #ActivityPub and #AT Protocol, and plenty of space for technical and creative collaboration.

👉 Do you have an exciting project, tool, research topic, or artistic format related to the Fediverse?
Then submit your proposal now and help us shape the future of the open web:
🔗 ctalx.c-base.org/fediday-2026/…

Berlin #Fediverse Day 2026 – Celebrate openness. Connect the community. Shape the future together.

When it comes to dreaming and #vision I'd like to thank @elena who dares to #dream, and whom I quoted in my article.

And the many people who work tirelessly to foster #cohesion, increasing the connectedness of our social fabric. Cross-pollinators. In my previous blog post on Grassroots #fediverse I already genuinely thanked whom I called "the pillars grassroots standardization" @evan and @silverpill

This is such important work. In that article I make many points which are unfortunately misunderstood by people as criticism, while it is the opposite. I admire all the fabulous work people are doing and have done over the years to bring #fedi where it is today.

But I argue that to really go next-level, to #ReimagineSocial, and enter the Future of Social networking, we must be able to take more holistic approaches to glue our fragmented online spaces together, and forge a #SocialWeb that is #inclusive to more people, so they can chime in with their 2 cents of #contribution to the whole.

@uriel

Yes! Good example of cross-pollination. Social dynamics in our FOSS movement are particularly fascinating and up for some major reflection on how to elevate #FOSS practices. As the field right now is inherently unsustainable.

Nice serendipity in you saying "standing on the shoulders of giants" as I just tooted to @janriemer about a sociologist that wrote the literal book with that name..

social.coop/@smallcircles/1166…

It follows discussion on "uncomfortable questions" about unintended consequences of our actions in-the-large i.e. what emerge at societal scale from individuals who think they are doing the good thing. The outcome might not be good, and FOSS movement might reflect their role on emergence of #BigTech and #AI. Today there is nothing, nothing at all, that withholds Big Tech and AI to say "thank you" and capture the #fediverse as their oyster, and we'll be complicit to bringing both yet even closer to our skin.

We must be able to operate more in unison and coordination.

Your post led me through a tour on the subject matter, and via the footnotes on the Wikipedia page I bumbed into a synopsis of the work of Robert K. Merton that is quite usable for incorporating with Social experience design, especially as it applies to our chaotic fediverse commons.

At the top of the blog post I just published I quoted your post and a text from the synopsis that relates to these "uncomfortable questions" we must nonetheless ask ourselves.

But the interesting part is about how to align Goals with Means, and the division into various groups based on how that is done. I will need more time to ponder these things, and nerd-snipe myself to follow the many branches this veers off on..

Fedizens, we dream! ✊
But what do we dream about? How do our dreams relate, where do they overlap? Might we realize them together? Turn our online places into a delightful commons of cross-pollination and cocreation? How can we make progress towards forging a better world together, and sustain that progress? Can we turn our collaborative efforts into much more than the sum of their constituent parts, and move on shared vision into a brighter future together?

Questions, questions.

In my previous blog post on Shared responsible ownership I claimed that a commons can be 🔥 ignited, and become unstoppable as it realizes positive societal impact. Able to withstand the corrosive forces of Hypercapitalism that seek to corrupt it.

Revolutionary evolution is possible! ✊

#Fediverse is the perfect environment to make this happen. We laid the foundations already. We have soil, so now we can blossom. 🌻

Fedizens, let's dream! ✊

It's the internet, people. It's OUR internet. Just because we decided to trust Google to not be evil doesn't mean that Google decides the future of the internet. We may very well have lost The Web, but we still can make the Internet of People. Decentralised. Unownable ;) Being here on the #Fediverse is part of that.

🚨 Mastodon 4.6.x Nightly update notice!

As you may know, Mastodon 4.5.10 includes some important security updates. However, some of you are still running an earlier Mastodon Nightly build from before those updates were applied.

You should be running at minimum:

4.6.0-nightly.2026-05-21-security

If you're using Mastodon+Glitch, you should be running at minimum:

v4.6.0-alpha.8+glitch

#Mastodon #FediAdmin #Security #Fediverse #ActivityPub

In a few days — perhaps in about a week — you’ll hear how all these Mastodon sites were hacked.

Why?

Because they didn’t update.

Some of you are running copies of Mastodon from two years ago or more, and you’ll still wonder why. 🤦

New @Vivaldi for your computer!

This time a lot of focus is on the design. At the same time we make it easier for you to see how flexible Vivaldi can be with layouts.

Let me know what you think! Still the only browser with a Mastodon Instance and a built in Mastodon (Vivaldi Social) panel!

Hollo 0.9.0 is out. github.com/fedify-dev/hollo/di…

The biggest change this release is a complete redesign of every server-rendered page. Pico CSS is replaced by a new design system built on UnoCSS, and your chosen theme color now tints your profile and dashboard pages throughout.

Other highlights:

  • Passkey (WebAuthn) authentication: sign in with a biometric or PIN gesture, which counts as MFA so there's no separate TOTP step
  • Full FEP-044f quote authorization: QuoteRequest/Accept/Reject federation, quote policy enforcement, and dereferenceable QuoteAuthorization objects
  • A configurable media proxy (MEDIA_PROXY=proxy or cache) that re-serves remote avatars, attachments, and preview images from Hollo's own origin
  • Optional split-domain WebFinger via HANDLE_HOST + WEB_ORIGIN
  • Public followers/following pages and per-post reaction list pages (likes, boosts, emoji reactions, quotes)

There were also several serious database performance fixes: profile page queries that were taking hundreds of seconds on cold caches, a NodeInfo endpoint doing a full table scan on every request, and a handful of timeline pagination bugs.

Fedle just passed 3000 games played across the #Fediverse.

Over 100 instances on the leaderboard, players guessing daily words in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German.

Thanks to everyone who plays, translates the interface, and shares the game. This only works because of you.

Thinking of adding ActivityPub to your project or a future project?

Don't know where to start?

activitypub.rocks/ is an excellent place.

They also have forums with massive amounts of helpful folks: socialhub.activitypub.rocks/

I'd also recommend Matrix! The Fediverse Developer's Network has some of the best folks actively working on AP software and they're all super friendly and coming.

Gave my son his first serious gift a few days ago.

A @protonprivacy "Born Private" activation code.

While most people are creating Gmail accounts for their newborns, I decided to start him off with actual privacy from day one.

A bit dramatic? Maybe. But in 15–20 years when he asks "Dad, why doesn’t my email spy on me?" — I'll just smile and say "You’re welcome".

Sometimes the best gifts are the ones they’ll only appreciate much later.

Mastodon has changed the way it previews a linked NeoDB collection:
- before, the middle of the cover image & the title in large text
- now, like a quote post, with the poster's info & first few lines of small text. No title, no cover image.

As perhaps the only person regularly posting NeoDB collections on Mastodon (& someone who has changed the design of NeoDB collection cover images for better preview on Mastodon), I'm not sure I approve! 😅

Yeh, two things I'm starting to really dislike about the #fediverse are epitomised in this post: the need for click-bait to get attention and the disconnect (double in this case) between the original source (a news site) and the appearance of matter in a generic information browser. This is almost as bad as embedded advertising.

#Fediverse, please make the magic happen and help this reach people who can offer advice or support.

I'm comfortable building and designing projects, but I'm honestly bad at promoting them.
I tried a donation call once for a new Mac, but after two hours I felt uncomfortable asking while Holos and my iOS work weren't mature enough to justify it. I closed the campaign and refunded the donors. Ironically, donations came later, on their own, with kind messages, covering about 10% of the computer budget.

Release v3.3.8 of Ktistec

This release continues my focus on security instead of new features. As I wrote earlier this week, I rebuilt the template framework Ktistec uses with type safety as a central principle. What does that mean?

Imagine that you have an instance of a String that holds federated data. Where can you safely render that in a browser, and what operations (sanitization, escaping, etc.) do you need to do first?

The only way to answer that is to look carefully at the lineage of that data: where it came from, how it was stored, how it was transformed, and where it's rendered. A name holds text; an href or src attribute holds a URL. If you want to render a name inside an HTML element you should HTML escape it. You should escape href and src, too, but the escaping rules for URLs are slightly different from the HTML rules. It's easy to make mistakes.

Ktistec uses four "safe" types to express the contracts:

SafeHTML: A String wrapper marking HTML markup safe to emit raw into HTML data slots (text content, between tags).

SafeAttrValue: A String wrapper marking a value safe to emit raw inside a double-quoted HTML attribute (attr="..."), other than URL or event-handler slots.

SafeURI: A String wrapper marking a URL safe to emit raw into a URL attribute slot (href, src, action, etc.).

SafeJSON: A String wrapper marking JSON output safe to emit raw into the body of a <script type="application/json"> block.

Using the wrong type at a call site is either a compile-time error, or it triggers automatic sanitization of the underlying string value.

Here's the full changelog:

Added

  • String safety framework with typed "safe" strings.
  • New Slang template engine with compile-time safety checks.
  • Vendored WebFinger and HostMeta client shards.

Fixed

  • Prevent delivery to unknown IRIs.
  • Narrow Like/Dislike addressing to the liked object's author.

I have at least one more cleanup pass to do, and then I'll turn my attention back to the Mastodon-compatible API and a few features I've been looking forward to—like scheduled posts.

We just released Bonfire Social 1.0.3 🔥

Blog post with all the details: bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bo...

It comes with dozens of bug fixes and UX improvements, plus:

  • Federated comments embeddable on any web page.
  • Deep Ghost integration: SSO, membership tier sync, and automatic article import.
  • New dashboard widgets: spotlight, polls closing soon, top discussions.
  • #CalmEmpowerment: a new design pattern that starts with a few sensible defaults, offers a middle layer of common adjustments, and reveals the full options only when you need them. Boundaries and post permissions got this treatment first, more to follow...
  • Modular community rules: a first step in bringing research and co-design with students and researchers at @hci@micro.blogs.princeton.edu into Bonfire, so governance becomes something communities can better define and share, and that others can fork and adapt.

Ohyes.. Before we forget it.. At #FOSDEM, we attended a workshop on the European Social Web organised by @evan of @SocialWebFoundation. The group agreed that social sovereignty in Europe depends on interoperability, decentralisation, open standards, and open source. A vision paper is in progress and will be released soon. Preludes were shared at #2MR by @michael and @bjoernsta.

FediSuite

500 characters can be a brutal limit. You have a thought, you start writing, and suddenly you are two sentences short. So you trim, rephrase, throw out important nuance. Or you cut the post up by hand and post it as a thread, which is annoying and easy to mess up. FediSuite splits your longer texts automatically into clean threads, at paragraph, sentence or word boundaries, with a preview, in the order you actually want to see. You write freely, the tool takes care of the splitting.

FediSuite

The Fediverse tells you very little about your own account. Mastodon shows a follower count, Pixelfed shows likes, PeerTube shows views. How your account is actually developing, which posts moved something, whether you are growing or whether engagement just dropped, you cannot really see anywhere. Until now. That is exactly why I built FediSuite. The dashboard gives you daily engagement, follower growth, your top posts and your real engagement rate. All from your own data, no algorithm in between, no ad network in the background.

I often get asked why more Green Party peeps aren't here on the Fediverse. 🤔 Don't we value what this platform stands for? Decentralisation, no ads, no algorithm. It all aligns so well with green politics! 🌱

In my district (Stroud, UK – 126k people), I'd guess maybe only three or four use the Fedi. None regularly. 😶 Whereas half the adult population uses Facebook daily. This is where I hit a brick wall every time I ask the party for greater presence here.

Green Party politics is all about impact, not purity. 💚 If we, as councillors, want to do stuff, save a local pub, organise an event, or challenge a planning decision, the party needs to reach the people affected, and sadly they're on Facebook. A platform I personally detest. 🙅‍♂️ So posting there isn't an endorsement of Meta; it's simply where the people are, and that's where the resources get put. 😔

The evidence also shows door-knocking, leaflets, and face-to-face conversations still way outperform digital for changing minds. 🗣️ Localism: showing up where people actually live is in the Green Party's DNA. 🏡

I'm here because running an instance is a hobby, and the Fedi connects me with other activists, journalists, tech experts, thinkers, as well as a few like-minded councillors. 🤝 This is more about networking, isn't it? Not outreach so much.

I'd love to see more Greens here too. But I think the reality is that the Green Party focus is going to have to be where our communities are, which I think is right, but sad too. 😔🌍

A friend of mine, @siliconsjang@siliconbeest.sjang.dev, released SiliconBeest v1.0.0 today. It's a #fediverse server built on #Cloudflare Workers, D1, R2, and Queues, using Fedify.

I like the starting point: after watching fediverse servers go down together during Cloudflare outages, they thought, why not just run on Cloudflare directly?

They're aiming for something cheap enough that a small instance can stay on Cloudflare's free plan, and a somewhat bigger one can fit in the $5/month tier. It's still early; a lot is missing, and Mastodon/Misskey API compatibility is more of a long-term goal.

I'm glad to see Fedify put to use for something like this. Worth checking out.

The source code is on GitHub under AGPL 3.0.

#ActivityPub #fedidev

There is a new #friendica app github.com/LiveFastEatTrashRac… - looks super good and I've heard they are promoting our instance too since it is quite lively and reliable.

I only tested the app a bit since I do not use mu phone much, but hey @Rokosun maybe you should give it a try! 😀 Maybe we finally have a great Friendica app 😀

Kudos to the people who are making these things. You are awesome people!

#UntrackMe 2.0 reached F-Droid today after nearly 4 years of inactivity.

Thank you for using them 😀

I've just updated my #Snac instance to stable version 2.92 👍 🎉
You don't know Snac? But you should: codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2
A simple, minimalistic and well documented #ActivityPub instance server written in C, no database needed, totally JavaScript-free, no cookies either, not much bullshit.
A lot of tweaks and new admin configs, woohoo!👍
From release notes: "Accounts that follow you are now marked with a thumb-up emoji, because followers are adorable people." 👍♥️
and "Minor tweak to webfinger code to handle Hubzilla's peculiarities." Many thanks for this, because I'm also on Hubzilla. 🎉

I just need to take a moment to say how absolutely marvellous you lot are.

Day after day after day I pop onto my feed and discover a world of joy, kindness, beauty, wisdom and insight. I learn about ant farms, whittling wood, sunsets in the Baltic, bees in Bavaria, film baths in Bath, pottery in Portland, and just loads more.

I get to see all the things that make you smile, and that makes me smile too. I get to see what matters to you folks. And I am reminded that there are so many good people in the world who really do care about this planet and the creatures we share it with.

I am a better person for being here, and that's because the rest of you are here too.
